Christmas Handicap 2016 – Heroes Just For One Day!, Houghall Woods, Sunday, December 18, 2016

~8km

Pam Kirkup

December 18th, the Sunday before Christmas and some 36 Striders turned up at Maiden Castle for our annual romp around Houghall Woods in ridiculous outfits to work up an appetite for Sunday Lunch at the Court Inn. And possibly to go home with a bottle of wine, some chocolates or a lunch voucher. Only a few prizes were for actual running – first finisher, fastest man, fastest lady and 1st Junior. The remaining 18 prizes were for fancy dress so the competition was fierce!

The theme was based on a choice of two lines from David Bowie songs, in honour of the great man who died last January: “We can be Heroes just for one day” or “Scary Monsters, super creeps” – an alternative spin on Heroes & Villains I guess.

From about 10.30 various startlingly colourful creatures just kept on arriving at Maiden Castle, to the astonishment of the reception staff. Only one Bowie but several Super Girls, Donald Trump, Jeremy Corbyn, three ‘Evil Sisters’, the Riddler, Ginger Spice and Tina Turner to name but a few.

Phil and Mike Hughes had been checking the course and marking any ‘hazards’ so at 11.00 we could make a prompt start. Of course there was the usual disbelief and mock horror at some of the handicap times given. Cries of, “That’s a ridiculous time for him” or “She must have a magic watch!” rent the air. However, the mockery died down and Starter/Timekeeper Sue set them off – subject to their highly suspect handicap times! Some found running easier than others who might have been somewhat handi-capped by their chosen outfits! Passing motorists were certainly highly amused.

Then after much shedding of tiaras, cutlasses and other accoutrements, runners began approaching the finish. First past the post was Mike Bennett in 38.04. Mike was absolutely delighted – in 29 years as a Strider he had never ‘won’ the Christmas Handicap. And he’s run most of them! Fastest man was Michael Mason in 30.26, fastest lady was Louise McCloy in 38.23, fastest Junior was Erin Keeler-Clarke in 38.04. The last finishers were the three evil sisters, Elaine Bisson, Lesley Charman and Katy Walton.

Afterwards, runners, supporters and marshals retired to the pub for lunch and the prize giving. Santa, ex-chairman Nick Young, presented the prizes, mainly for fancy dress as chosen by his two elves, Janice Young and Gill Wesson.

It was another very enjoyable Strider social event and I’d like to thank all those runners who took part, most in some sensational costumes. Thanks also go to the Start/finish team Sue Jennings and Phil Owen, the marshals, Mike and Phil for their work on the course and of course to Santa who always does a great job.

Christmas Handicap, Houghall Woods, Sunday, January 3, 2016

Pam Kirkup

Do they know it’s Christmas?

Mandy easily Breaking Free To bring to an end our 30th anniversary year of celebration focusing on 1985 seemed entirely appropriate. A few of us would remember fondly (or otherwise!) New Romantics, David Bowie, the end of the Punk era … Margaret Thatcher. Others would be toddlers or in nappies! However, scope for fancy dress seemed vast and the runners did not disappoint. Numbers were down from last year as it was still very close to the New Year’s festivities but by 11.00am we had a motley crew of runners, leaders and supporters ready to face the quagmire which was Houghall Woods.

Back to haunt us all! At 10.30 it was still very quiet in the cafeteria at MC and then in burst Freddie Mercury in true Live Aid garb, an unrecognisable Mandy Dawson. There followed Dougie, resplendent as Adam Ant (Prince Charming mode!), Anita as a cross between Toyah Wilcox and Cyndi Lauper and George as John McEnroe. Another version of Adam Ant appeared along with Doc Brown from Back to the Future. Tom seemed to be Too shy as Limahl and Catherine Smith brought You cannot be serious! her welding helmet from Flash dance. Michael came in a chavvy shell suit and then, the piece de resistance … Margaret Thatcher in red suit and gold handbag – Mike Bennett by any other name.

The weather was kind to us – no rain and it was reasonably mild. The woods were very muddy but everyone managed to get around. Mike amused the passers-by Has anyone seen my DeLorean?by delicately holding up his red skirt in order to run. There was great teamwork with the marshals and helpers at the finish and I’m very grateful to Anna, Tom & Anita for leading some of the newer runners around the course.

After a successful run we went back to the Court Inn for a very well deserved lunch. Santa, alias Nick Young – a member since 1985 and a former chairman – assisted Paul in the presentation of prizes. Fancy Dress prizes were also given to Tom, Anita, Dougie and of course Santa for their help and support on the day.

Once again, I’d like to thank everyone who helped out today. It was a very happy sociable event.

I joined the Striders at the end of the summer last year missing the handicap season so it was with some trepidation that I lined up for my first attempt on a very warm and humid night in June. I felt ridiculously nervous as I always do before any running event but I have met some great friends since joining so we had a bit more time than usual to catch up whilst the lovely Flip, Anita and Mark tried to get everyone organised. There had been some talk of being marked with a sharpie so we didn’t forget our numbers which is ok if you think it is a permanent marker pen, not so much if you believe it to be a small flick knife! Not surprisingly there was soon a queue of people asking Anita to confirm their handicap number before she brandished the sharpie.

For what we are about to receive ...

Once we had been organised we were ready for the off. Being at the slower end of the pack I didn’t have long to wait before we were on our way and (after ducking behind the lady in front to avoid the official photographer) we headed up the road towards the woods. Let me set something straight before we go any further – I am quite slow, more of a jogger than a runner, and not particularly competitive but that said I did have a vested interest in at least keeping up with the others in my little group: they knew where they were going and I didn’t!

We hadn’t been off-road for long before we encountered the first hill (or undulating terrain as it is better described as by running folk – it’s a less intimidating way of saying quite hilly). I took it very easy at first as I have a habit of pushing myself a bit too hard for the first part of a race then living to regret it for the rest when I have to crawl the last few miles. It has taken me a while (and a decent GPS watch) to realise that pacing myself is the key to enjoying the whole run. I ran alongside a friend and we tried to keep each other motivated as we went along through Houghall Woods. The group had started to spread out a little after about a mile and there was a little moment of panic at a fork in the path when we thought we had lost our unofficial guides to the route but a little glimpse of purple on the track ahead got us back on the right path.

Any residual nerves had gone once the first loop was under my belt and the cheers of the purple army organisers at the start/finish point pushed us on to the second lap. You really see the Striders at their best when everyone is running along the same route: plenty of overtaking followed by lots of ‘well dones’, ‘keep going’ and friendly banter. This is why I love this club – everyone is encouraged to just run at their own ability. You don’t need to be super-fast or able to run marathons you just have to enjoy running. Maybe you are competing with your peers or just against yourself but whatever your goals there is a place for you in the club.

There was talk of chocolate ... I’m not going to lie my biggest motivation to complete the second loop was not the fabulously supportive purplies but the promise of chocolate at the finish line so it was no surprise that I felt a burst of energy as we rounded the corner back that lead back to the finish line. Describing it as a sprint finish would be a little misleading given that my flat out sprint is probably classed as a ‘steady or comfortable’ pace by most seasoned runners but it was definitely fast for me. Most Striders had already finished and were lined up along the route cheering everyone into the funnel towards Anita so we could give her our number (there are so many of us there is no time to write names down) and record our time. Then the reward…….not just chocolates, but mini-cupcakes and slices of fruit.

I really enjoyed my first experience of the handicap and I am looking forward to the challenge of improving my time over the rest of the summer. Thanks to those who work so hard to organise these events for the rest of us to enjoy.

This is my fourth year organising the handicap, the last three years with Ladies captain Anna Seeley. As a level three coach now, Anna had a bit too much on this year to organise with me so Anita Dunseith has kindly stepped. We’d like to thank Anna for all the hard work over the last few years.

For the past couple of years, when the handicap has come round, I’ve wondered how popular it would be and every year I’ve been surprised just how many are still up for it. After all it’s a far from easy option and can be a little daunting for the uninitiated. We have tried to address that by putting runners in groups and having lead runners for those new to the route. This seems to work well and numbers have been up every year. However, as the emails came in beforehand with 5k & 10k times it was clear, the handicap was still a popular option but I hadn’t envisaged the massive purple posse made their way over to the start. Over ninety runners, a club record by over twenty stood waiting the off! A good omen for XC in the winter, something I think the handicap is good training for in many ways. (lapped circuit, timed and being watched )

Anita and I had disused making the first handicap more of a time trial , as Anna an I had done on a number of occasions and with so many new runners we decided to implement that although still roughly in time order. It worked well. The fastest male on the evening was Michael Littlewood with a fantastic time of 31:57 very closely followed by Graeme Walton 32:21 and James garland 32:24. Conrad wasn’t far off with 33:21

The fastest lady was Helen Tones with a nifty 36:04 with Sarah Davies not far behind in 37:16. Katy and penny take note…

The handicap isn’t about the fastest and we had some very gritty performances right the way through the field, particularly from some of our new runners, at least one of who shed a few tears but ground a great run out. As I said earlier, the handicap is never the easy choice. Lots of folk had some excellent runs but to pick just a few out, Debbie MacFarland knocked two minutes from last year’s time and Denise Benvin continues her storming progress. Laura Jackson dug deep and continues to improve all the time while Phil Todd also had an excellent run. The night’s performance goes to Shaun Roberts who I’m sure a few of you will never have heard of. A club member for many years and until recently our webmaster, Shaun has had an injury hell and not been able to run for 14 months. He ran a superb 38:52. It’s good to see you back Shaun and we hope the recovery continues.

A big hand to Anita for dealing with the huge numbers and getting the results out very fast. Dave Robson and Anna Seeley were also a huge help, and many more lent a hand. The chocolate all went but all the talk was of the fantastic water melon-apparently it’s the new chocolate. A fantastic strider evening, long may the tradition continue. See you next month.

OH NO IT ISN’T!

What a fantastic turnout we had today – and the sun was shining on a perfect day for running!

You wouldn't mess with this pair. Six weeks ago I thought it wasn’t going to happen. Too many GP races and other events were crowding in so the entry for my original date was pitiful – a whole 6 people. Today we had 10 times that number with only a few withdrawals – all for viral infections or injuries. So at 10.55 this morning we all gathered together on the field for the annual group photograph. And the costumes were amazing! We had pirates, pantomime dames, princesses, several Red Riding Hoods (at least one male version!), Rudolph the red nosed …, a wicked witch, Cinderella, a host of other characters including Scott as the Wolf from Red Riding Hood who terrified runners and passers-by with his antics.

If you go down to the woods today. We congregated in MC before we ventured out into the cold and I noticed a line of men queueing for coffee and looking with astonishment at the stream of people arriving dressed in bizarre costumes. It was priceless!

So we got started at around 11.00am and thankfully everyone was ready for their start time. The finish was a bit busy to say the least. Thankfully a group of Striders and marshals managed to funnel finishers into the right order. It worked perfectly! I’d like to thank everyone who helped. Tom & Joan Reeves marshalled at crucial turning points – and Joan decorated a couple of places with tinsel. Phil & Anna were a huge help with the course, leading new runners and helping at the finish. Sue did a great job registering runners and helping me with the timing and of course a huge thanks to Santa and his elves who came out of hibernation in Lapland for the day to support the race and help at the finish. Thank you again to MC Tom who did the presentation in the pub – sorry about all the e-mails!!

Panto Villains, the lot of them.
