Heaton Harriers Memorial 10k 2023

Town Moor, Sunday, November 12, 2023

Having not entered a race for over a year due to injury, I stumbled across this race only 3 weeks before it was due to be run. I wanted a bit of motivation to get me out of the door so signing up for a race was the perfect excuse to do so.

The Heaton Harriers Memorial 10K is described as a fast, flat 10k. It takes place on the Town Moor in Jesmond, just outside of Newcastle. The race starts at 11:01, taking in a minute’s silence for Remembrance Day at 11am. Having discussed the course with some fellow Elvet Striders, I was pleased with my choice of comeback race. It’s basically 2 laps of the parkrun course and if the weather is good (the Town Moor is quite exposed and can get some very strong winds at times) then I should have no problems.

The weather was perfect, sunshine, blue sky and a very mild 12 degrees without a hint of any wind.

I had also signed my son, Zachary to the Junior U11 1k which starts at 9:30. We arrived at the race HQ in good time to collect our numbers and have some light refreshment before our races. The junior race was of a very high standard with Zachary completing the out and back course in 4min 50sec, a fantastic run! This left us with a good hour and a half before my race was due to start. We headed towards the café for a light breakfast and to reflect on Zachary’s great run and poppy medal.

I left Zachary and his mum, Leanne, in the café whilst I headed back into the park to warm up before the race began. After some rigorous warm up exercises, I saw a few fellow striders at the start line and headed over for a quick chat. After observing the minutes silence, the start gun went off with a considerable bang and we were off.

The initial 2k of the run followed the main path, curving towards the outer edge of the Town Moor. Negotiating through the gate, we transitioned onto the public footpath along Grandstand Road before looping back into the park. Returning to the park marked a shift in terrain, with the majority now comprising uneven gravel surfaces. At around the halfway point, Leanne and Zachary had made their way from the café to provide some much-needed cheer, it was an absolute delight to see them both clapping and cheering on all the runners with Zachary shouting “come on David, keep going”.

At this point I had also caught up with fellow strider Rich Bielby. We exchanged some light chat and kept each other at a constant pace on the second lap, I tried to pull away at 9k, but Rich kept on my heels, and I just about crossed the line ahead of my teammate.

I collected my poppy medal and headed back to meet Leanne and Zachary near the finish line, we headed towards the Wylam Brewery for a coffee and a well needed rest.

In conclusion, the Heaton Harriers Memorial 10K turned out to be great race for me. The perfect weather, the support from my family, and the usual camaraderie with fellow Striders made this a fantastic morning of running. Watching my son, Zachary, excel in the Junior U11 1k added an extra layer of pride and joy. Crossing the finish line with a time of 48:45, less than 1 min off my personal best, was a delightful surprise.
